Lovely ambiance and great food. A family run restaurant, located on the corner so lots of big windows. I had the lamb kabob and salad and saw others with eggplant, chicken kabob entrees etc. everyone is very attentive, but not overly so. They get it. The wine from Turkey was a great recommendation. They also make espresso and other great drinks.

Great little place in a sleepy town. My only critique is that the menu is ultra small so there's a chance you can't find something you are in the mood for. Aside from that it seems anything you pick is high quality. The kids weren't impressed by the hot chocolate but my coffee was rich European style which I like. Steamed milk and granola with blueberries was excellent.

Needing a pit stop for healthy lunch food, I turned to Yelp and this place had enough (recent) positive reviews. On the plus side, the coffee is excellent. I ordered a dirty chai (which was not in the menu but very doable by making a chai and adding a shot of espresso) and it came out hot and in a round handled mug that I could wrap my hands around. Yay! On the minus side, I wanted something light and ordered their Shepherds Salad which was advertised as tomato and cucumber with assorted seasonings in a lemony dressing. Now, I've eaten many tomato cucumber salads, usually at Greek restaurants, but this one was about 7/10 tomato and 3/10 everything else. I wanted bigger slices of cucumber, not the tiny slivers I got. I also expected, from other places, more of an even distribution of tomato to cucumber. Nope. At $8, I was unimpressed and despite eating nearly an entire tomato it didn't fill me. This is why I'm giving my review only four stars.

Clean and full of character. Excellent coffee, unique food and a warm atmosphere. Sunday morning routine. Try the cold brew coffee!

Dear lord this place is amazing. My boyfriend and I were planning a trip to Vermont and I had bookmarked this place because it fell under the coffee category and was right around the corner from the hotel we were staying at, so I figured it'd be good for a breakfast stop, however a coffee shop this is not. (They do serve coffee though and it's good) Once we got up to White River Junction though it was pissing rain and we kind of wanted to just hang around by the hotel. I was sick of driving and there wasn't a whole lot around so we settled on eating here. They don't really take reservations per se (or names) and it was a zoo on Saturday night. When we showed up at 6:30, the hostess advised us to come back around 8 as it should be a little emptier then. We did just that and were seated immediately. We got the stuffed grape leaves (my first time having them, ever) and I ordered the doner kebab. My boyfriend got one of the guvec things - I think it was the lamb. For dessert we got the apple maple baklava (we were on a "Hey we're in Vermont, let's get lotsa maple stuff" kick. Everything was super delicious. The service was good, there was a minor snafu where I had ordered an iced chai and they brought it to me hot, but they happily rectified it. The decor was pretty adorable too.

I came here one night when I was on a business trip at Dartmouth. I used trusty ol yelp to find me a great spot to eat. I was originally going to a restaurant down the street but found it was closed for a few weeks when I arrived. I was disappointed but found Tuckerbox with equally great reviews right down the street. It's located in this cute little downtown area of white river junction. Takes a minute to get to but it's worth it. I walked in and it was packedddd. I was lucky to get a seat at their makeshift bar area. At this point I'm pretty starving so I decide to order the appetizer sampler and a chicken kebab. It comes with this awesome tortilla like bread that is puffed up when it's served to you. The bread is warm and chewy. Perfect for dipping in my hummus, eggplant, and yogurt dips. The chicken kebab was amazing. It was cooked to perfection and soooo tender. It came with this cabbage salad and rice. Yum I want to eat it again.

Great little find in White Junction! Meze platter was just perfect and their chicken pesto sandwich was delicious.

Fresh everything from the hummus to the kebabs to the Turkish Coffee. Great service and even greater meal.

Well it was hunt for late dinner on the way to Montreal. Tuckerbox appeared closest right off I91(exit 11). The look is chic and appealing right on the corner of the street. But what amazed is was the taste of the food. A big group we ordered almost all big items off the menu and boy the food just pampered the taste buds. Shish kababs, adane kabab, beef even the appetizers falafel and hummus left that savoring taste. Great place.

This wasn't the best experience. It was an experience that was at best alright driven by less than mediocre food and a lackluster customer service. Sitting at the bar, one can overhear the snarky comments of the colorless supervisor to his force of trainees as the kitchen lines plates in front of customers ready to be run to other customers in a very confusing manner. When the food finally comes is when true disappointment sets in. Donër is the Turkish version of shawarma/gyro depending on the meat. We had the chicken and lamb/beef. Both lacking in natural vivacity and tact. Very dry meat. Very VERY dry meat. Shawarma and gyro (or donër) is almost like a sausage slow roasted on a spit and shaved as it cooks. It is mixed with spices and natural fats that cook into a moist, soft, hearty experience. This was not the case here, it was the opposite.

Positively the best place to eat in WRJ. Also the most friendly staff and servers. This is some real world, home-cooked, daily-made, fresh Turkish and Mediterranean food. Prices are a tad high but I'll take it in otherwise weary and bland White River Junction! Eat here!!!

I've been here twice now on two separate occasions while visiting my friends. Coming from San Francisco, I'm spoiled with really great coffee everywhere, but this place does not disappoint. The lattes are large and reasonably priced; the coffee is high quality and doesn't taste burnt. Sit down on a cold day inside with a hot beverage and enjoy a pastry. Most recently, I got a mango clove scone which was delightful, slightly warm, and a perfect companion to my coffee. The blueberry muffin that my friend got was equally delicious and doesn't taste like mass-produced, generic baked goods. The last time I was there, I got their egg samwich, which is delicious but pretty filling and heavy - with egg, ham, and buttery thick white bread. Good if you're nursing a hangover, but I think I prefer the pastry + coffee combination. This is a great coffee shop that has a great ambiance, brick walls, nice staff, and quality food & drinks. It could be easy & pleasant to spend a morning or afternoon hanging out here.

1st time at this lovely Turkish restaurant. We had a 7:00 reservation and we were seated promptly. The food was very fresh and the lamb kebabs were the best I have ever had The waitresses and waiters were friendly, and very helpful . Overall a very nice experience

What a lovely place for a cup of coffee and some middle eastern dessert. Place was packed by 5:30 on a Saturday night by early dinner eaters but even so service was friendly and coffee and dessert delicious. If in this area will definitely go back.

Restaurants in the Upper Valley tend to be pretty mediocre (scout Yelp and most restaurants score around 3 stars), but Tuckerbox is an exception. My family has been raving about this place for awhile now and I came here to see what the excitement was about. We started with the Babaganoush and Lavash Bread. It was just the two of us and we devoured every last bite. My mom (who's probably their biggest supporter in my family) was a little disappointed that the Lavash wasn't piping hot, which she said is the norm, but it was still delicious. I had the Dönor Kebab and she had the Adana Kebab. I completely cleaned my plate (and it was a lot of food). The house pickled red cabbage was a highlight for me. She found hers to be too spicy, but she'd been forewarned. I finished the meal with a hot chocolate which was fantastic (best I've had in the area). The service was great and the owners were incredibly nice. This is definitely one of the better restaurants in or near Hanover. Also worth noting, although I can't speak to this myself, but the coffee connoisseurs in my family say they make the best cappuccinos in the Upper Valley. Also their breakfast is supposed to be great (also from my family who comes here a lot) and I'll probably be heading back to try it later this week and will update my review then.

My daughter and granddaughters took me here for dinner on grandparents day recently. It was our first visit...but definitely, the first of many! I am a serious foodie and have lived in many places where authentic ethnic cuisines could be enjoyed in local restaurants. However, in this area of New England, that's sadly not the case...until now! What a treat to eat the delicious, fresh, perfectly prepared food we enjoyed at Tuckerbox! I've never had such tender chicken kebabs in my life! ALL the meats were perfectly seasoned and moist and very tender. The rice was delicious, tasting of the fresh sweet butter and perfectly balanced seasoning classic in Middle Eastern white rice. Everything on the mezze plate was yummy and distinctive, unlike the mezze at restaurants where it's hard to taste the difference between the hummus and the babaganoush. When they brought the naan, it arrived hot and puffed high from the oven, wafting the mouthwatering fragrance of yeast. I cannot recall ever experiencing that outside of a bakery or my own dining room. The desserts were delicious, the Turkish coffee divine, every sip a treat! The service was friendly, attentive, well-informed, everything was clean, the background music perfect for the ambiance and for conversation. My only suggestion would be that naan be included with mezze, rather than ordered as a separate menu item. On the drive home, we praised the meticulous skilled preparation of each item, the freshness, and the artistry of the seasonings. BTW, I have never tasted stuffed dolmas prepared so deliciously. If you've only tasted tart, tough, oily deli or restaurant dolmas, you'll be amazed and will love the real thing served at the Tuckerbox!

Grabbed some lunch to go as kids were sleeping in car. Best baba ghanoush I've ever had. Wonderfully smokey and flavorful. Nicely spiced and super fresh tasting food all around. Perfect cappuccino. Every bite/sip was delicious. Had mezze platter, velvety but light red lentil soup & standout chicken doner kebob salad. I'm going to crave this place. Only prob is I'm from Boston.

Phenomonal food in great locale. Hummus, other dips, grape leaves, homemade pita all original and fresh. All baked goods are delicious and place is super authentic and feels like it could be in williamsburg. Turkish coffee and all coffee drinks are superlative.

I've been a huge fan of the tuckerbox since it opened, so when I heard about a change in ownership, I was concerned. Not that I mind change: but not when it messes up something that's already terrific. What a surprise to say that the tuckerbox is better under new ownership! Now it's not only a terrific coffeeshop, but is transformed at night into a charming restaurant serving delicious Turkish food. In the morning, you'll find a Mediterranean breakfast and Turkish pastries. And many of these specialties -- like felafels or the zucchini fritter, the size of a small plate, caramelized on the outside and creamy on the inside -- show up on the lunch menu, so you can enjoy them during the day. But don't miss the complete experience -- from mezze to dessert -- at night. Most of what you'll eat is made in-house. Everything we tasted was superb, from the babaganoush with chunks of roasted peppers, to the meatball kebabs (ground lamb, charred on the outside and tender on the inside) to the salty and rich Turkish olives. My picky niece declared her chicken kebabs, marinated and charred from the grill, to be the best chicken she'd ever eaten, which is saying a lot. And stuffed eggplant (imam bayildi) with vegetables was tender and delicious--one of a number of vegetarian options on the menu. For dessert, an almond and coconut custard was not sweet at all, the perfect ending for the meal. And don't miss the lahvosh, which comes out hot and steamy: you'll savor every bite and order another. I'd recommend making reservations if you want to have dinner. Service is comfortable and the atmosphere charming and informal. There's a small wine list of mostly Turkish wines. We ordered a bottle of the house red, which is similar to a pinot noir and a decent value for the price. I'm eager to taste some of the other options!

Did not get to eat DINNER here, yet, BUT Impressed by response to our disappointment at their not getting or responding to our Yelp message requesting reservation. We arrived and learned they did not look at yelp messages, only reviews despite the messaging capability in yelp. Restaurant very busy, and while polite, sort of fumbled the situation. But later responded via yel/email and now will check. Have been to Tuckerbox happily many times before generally for coffee or lunch but before current dinner offerings, which several friends have praised. So we are still looking forward to it. Positive remarks for turning around a negative situation.

Such an amazing find! We were on our way coming home from skiing and just so happened on this place because we missed an exit during a blizzard. The food was only outclassed by the service we received. The owner was super attentive and you can see and feel the passion he has for the food. I really can't say enough great things about this place. You must try for yourself, you won't regret it!!!

We shared the falafel sandwich and small mezze platter for lunch. The falafel sandwich was on Texas toast which I thought was slightly weird, but it was buttery and delicious. The falafel was made in a patty which was perfect for the sandwich. The only detractor was the sandwich was a little dry, but we used some of the delicious sauce from the mezze platter to rectify that. It wasn't advertised, but they MADE the pita for the mezze platter which was amazing. The 4 sides were really good, and the grape leaves were exceptional. I wish there was slightly more if each of the dips to go with the pita, but the quality and flavor of everything was excellent.

Very disappointing. Stopped in once a few months ago, around 3:10 pm, people were still eating. Although restaurant advertises takeout, we were told that can be only during lunch or dinner hours, not at 3:10 pm. A rather dim, unsmiling, bored looking counter person delivered this news. This weekend returned to try again to get some takeout. We ended up with two "large" orders of a mezza plate. Hugely disappointing: $40 for a few soggy stuffed grape leaves, a big piece of undercooked bread and a few dabs of 3 different kinds of dipping sauce: one, the very spicy one, was actually good, the others (hummus and what seemed like tsatsiki) were ordinary at best. Again, the attitude from the same ( or a clone) counter person. No "thank you" or "Can we get you anything else?" It might be worthwhile and even interesting to try some of the other menu items, but with such an uninviting atmosphere and service, it's unlikely we'll bother. There are several good restaurants in this area and even more in Woodstock and Hanover. I see no point in wasting time and money on this one.

I need to explain the two stars. I love this place - charming, quaint, rustic, with wonderful wooden tables, a great menu and excellent coffee. Yet what I simply can't get over is the unfriendly, even occasionally straight up rude staff. They're not nice people. They don't care about the customer. I tried to check if a sandwich I was waiting for was ready after 20 minutes, and the person I was speaking to wouldn't even make eye contact with me. It's baffling that owners who have clearly funneled a lot of thought, time and money into such a charming spot would not take the time to hire friendly people!

I've never actually had coffee here so it feels odd to give it a rating since Tuckerbox started as and still is a coffeeshop. On the first visit, they only had a simple sandwich menu. I had the BLT which was excellent and used good quality bacon from across the river in NH. Since then, the place changed hands and has added Turkish food and stays open for dinner on weekends. The Turkish menu is good, although pricey for the portion sizes, but it's probably the only Turkish food in the Upper Valley. The falafel sandwich is good, although a little dry. I've had the Mezze platter twice and everything on it is super flavorful. It comes with a huge freshly made lavash bread so I wish they'd put a bit more of each dip on.

We had breakfast first morning on our vacation. I ate scone which was so light and flavorful. And breakfast sandwich was so tasty. The bread they use was especially good. Then I've heard they even serve dinner. My guessing was right. Dinner was even better. Shrimp casserole was something I never had before. The sauce reminded me between good indian and french. Very very sophisticated. I hope I visit here next time it'll stay the same. I love the atmosphere, too!!!

Ever date a girl in college and at a kegger, you and your brah The Chetster convince her to flirtatiously take the glasses off the quiet girl on the couch and then the quiet girl blushes, and then your girlfriend kisses the quiet girl and then The Chetster goes for a high five but then you realize the kiss is going on for a long time, and then they leave together and you never speak to her again? Just me? Well, White River Junction is the quiet girl, coffee culture hipsterism is The Chetster and Tuckerbox is your girlfriend. You happen to be the guy who orders a proper tuna and fennel wrap (a good-sized stuffer packed to the gills with chunk white tuna in a may/dill/fennel dressing) and a watery, overpriced chai, while losing what you thought you understood to something more deserving, and with a greater, more tortured necessity. Work from the cafe type? Be forewarned: this place would get a star dropped if I based it on the manners of other patrons (which I would never, but still) as there were singles sprawled out with folders and MacBooks at four-tops, and mothers blocking passageways to open seats with babies in out-of-car car seats. What are those things called anyway? Seriously. Sweet spot. Give it a go if stopping through the WRJ.

While passing through Vermont I came across the Tuckerbox on Yelp. All of the reviews were spot on! This is a very hip coffee bar and sandwich shop. At the moment there are 16 people in here for lunch, and all of them are using some kind of Apple device. I had a delicious Americano with a grilled cheese sandwich. I asked if they would add a slice of ham to the sandwich to make it a croque monsieur, and they did. The sandwich bread was homemade and fresh -thick and fluffy. Definitely a good choice!

Lovely little oasis smack dab on my route to and from Montreal. Until this weekend, the extent of my knowledge of White River Junction was the Greyhound terminal. A travesty! I swung into town, had a delightful sandwich (chicken and pesto - more chicken salad than I'd expected, but very tasty), and a great iced latte for the road. It made my long, long drive much happier. If only they had been open when I was passing back through town on Sunday!

My first experience wasn't the greatest but I'm all for the Upper Valley getting some more color, culture, and flair sooo... 4 stars! Didn't realize how popping this new hot spot would be at 8PM on a Friday night so came with 2 friends and without a reservation for dinner. We probably only waited 15 minutes to be seated, not bad. I was happy to see a couple vegetarian entrees to choose from. Unfortunately rice was a staple in the dishes we ordered and our server neglected to inform us that they had run out for the day. The dishes came with a little side salad instead and when I asked about the rice to another server, he apologized that we weren't forewarned. I had ordered what essentially was a veggie stew and felt like I needed something to pick it up. The server offered to bring us a complimentary freshly baked lavash bread, and thank goodness he did! That stuff is delicious. The flavors are good, the portions could be bigger. I did feel dishes were a little overpriced but that's nothing new in the UV. The service was also pretty slow, maybe the servers are new? Regardless of the few hiccups, I'll be back to give the new Tuckerbox another shot.

It takes a lot for a restaurant to surprise me but this one knocked my socks off! My girlfriend suggested it on a co-workers recommendation and I mockingly said, "Yeah, I'm sure it's the best Turkish food in WRJ"... Well I ate my words along with an amazing meal as it was truly wonderful Mediterranean food! We didn't know if we'd need reservation but called ahead on a Saturday night with about 30 minutes notice... The owner said they were very busy to he'd love to have us and to come down and he'd make something work. The service was very helpful and friendly and the food was amazing! We started with an appetizer of spreads (haydari, hummus, babaganoush, Turkish salsa) that came with stuffed grape leaves and a steaming fresh lavash bread. We shared a Mixed Grill Kebab Platter that had shaved beef & lamb, lamb & chicken kebabs, a grilled meatball and a seasoned ground chicken. It was served with grilled veggies and rice pilaf that was buttery and savory. All the meat was delicious but the lamb kebab was out of this world! While it is a "coffee house" style place that has only recently opened for dinner I can't wait to get back!

This is a wonderful spot. My mother and I were in town for a baking class at King Arthur and stopped in for dinner. We split lavash bread and babaganoush, which was fresh and homemade. She loved her Adana Kebaba and I had the Shepard salad with the best falafel I have ever had. I would come back in a heartbeat!

    (5)
  • Krina S.

great coffee! and great falafel! they are a little pricey and so I can't come here very often, and I can't comment on most of their dinner items since I'm vegetarian, but honestly this is a great cafe by day, and a really nice classy restaurant by night! the owner takes a lot of pride in the authenticity and freshness of his food too, and is very accommodating overall! definitely a place to check out!

I only stopped here once -- while staying at a nearby hotel -- but it was a great little place! I wish I could have stayed longer and not had to get back on the road. I was there in the AM, so I didn't get to try their awesome looking dinner menu, but their fried egg sandwich was delicious and their coffee was awesome. More than that though, it was just super-friendly. I found myself thinking, if I lived in Vermont, I would come here every day!

I thought it was a coffee shop from the window, but it turned out to be Turkish and Mediterranean cuisine! My boyfriend and I connected and are having a great, unique meal! The people are 10/10 friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend that you come here for a nice, unique meal!

Happiest accident on our New England trip. We pulled into Vermont from Maine at 9:30. When we travel we deliberately avoid chains in favour of locally owned flavor (which Yelp had made much easier to find) Being from Las Vegas we aren't accustomed to the words "we're closed," but that's exactly what we got from a nearby place. We stopped at The Tuckerbox and given the name we were expecting a heap of American comfort food. Instead, we found something we can't get even in the culinary Mecca of Las Vegas-authentic Turkish Food. We were greeted by an exceptionally friendly staff and owner. We ordered several items to share to sample the menu. Everything was delicious, right down to the authentic Turkish Coffee and rice pudding.

Delicious food. The marinaded stake basically melts in your mouth. I don't recommend going for a romantic dinner because it's not a quiet atmosphere. The place is usually packed with people and it's very loud, good crowd though. Service is great too.

I can only say with a lot of excitement that another reviewer who said that sip for sip and bite for bite this is the Upper Valley's best cafe was very right! I've been coming here at least once if not twice per week in the last two years and I cannot commend this place enough. The service is OUTSTANDING. Reed, Danielle and May are very friendly, remember customers by name and even remember customers' beverage preferences which is a great touch. They also make great coffees. Which brings me to...coffees. This place makes the best coffees west of Italy and Turkey! Whether you want a delicious expresso or an authentic Turkish coffee (including the Turkish delight), Tuckerbox will not disappoint. Not only is this place a great choice for a coffee break, it is also an awesome choice for lunches and dinners! I regularly take the kebab salad because it is both extremely delicious and healthy (juicy kebab freshly prepared, with fresh salad, a delicious dressing and some yummy yogurt based sauce). For dinner, the meze platter will wet your appetite and any of the kebabs will leave you happily full! Ask for the Turkish red - a delight! Also ask for Vural, the owner. You'll very likely find him very involved, either in the kitchen or talking to customers. He's a great guy with a service attitude and friendliness that is fully aligned with that of Tuckerbox's overall feel! I will miss this place a lot as I leave the upper valley! I hope it stays as charming as it is now.

Stopped by this little gem one late Friday night when it wasn't open and swore to come back given the fact that it seemed like a wonderful novelty coffee shop and wasn't disappointed. Small place that brews pretty solid coffee. Limited selection of pastries and a typical selection of lunch items. 3 stars for being a solid place with good selection but 4 stars for excellent ambiance. The place was packed around 10am on a Thursday which was pretty cool to see. Not too much space to sit at but just seemed like an excellent complement to the quirks that you would except form a place like WRJ. Yes, it's just a typical coffee shop. But it's a good one.

The place had changed hands since I was there last time 4 months ago. This is my stop for my drive to Canada. Now there is some ethnic food on the menu, like kebab! I did not try that, but it seems there are less bakery item, which they used to have more. The sandwich was ok. I ordered a chicken peso sandwich. Unless it is a special house recipe??? WTH? Peso is green and not white, though I am no Michelin chef, I can tell the taste between peso and mayo. My chicken sandwich was actually a chicken mayo sandwich, chicken in white mayo. I did not make a fuss, I was on the road for more than 5 hours already, and really needed some food in my tummy. God knows what goes on in that kitchen!

They've done a great job building on a nice atmosphere and community vibe in this established cafe, crafting a menu not repeated elsewhere nearby. The food is quite good-- quality ingredients and tasty (if a little pricey for what it is). I am willing to pay for it, especially because this is a family business striving to be unique. The coffee drinks are excellent too, and they have good baked items like blueberry muffins, plus unusual bakery goods like popovers. The Egg Sandwich was hearty, complete with Turkish sausage. We ate every last drop on the Vegetable Platter as well. Vegetarians and non-vegetarians will equally like it here, and though crowded, there is no one rushing you to move on. They also accommodated those with wheat issues by replacing lavash bread (which is delicious) with vegetable sticks, at no extra charge. We will be back!

  • Jo J.

I'll get to the point: every one of us liked every item we ate and drank during our first outing here (for dinner). Simple as that. Know that for a year this has been a Mediterranean/Turkish restaurant, and only 2 months ago started serving dinners; it is not the former coffee/lunch place. They kept the name (a marketing error in several ways, I think; for example, many locals have not realized they are now a totally different restaurant than the place that came before it, and who would think "great ethnic restaurant" when hearing "Tuckerbox"?) That said... this place is *great.* You will definitely want to make a reservation as it is small and rapidly becoming more popular. We were 4 people: two 50-something and two 80-something adults, we all shared the sampler appetizer plate, an excellent introduction to usual and unusual Mediterranaen fare except that everything was so *fresh!*. We tried four different entrees & four different desserts and all had wines recommended by one of the owners to go with each of our dishes. Fresh ingredients, delicious food, cozy nighttime ambiance, easy parking, attentive and well-timed service even when completely full. March 2015 Update: We've been back twice since writing the original review, and still stand by every word. Our only new comment is that sometimes you must have a reservation and at other times it can be an easy walk-in.

A decent meal for it being the Upper Valley... Perfect portion. Great menu items and lots to choose from an amazing variety of foods. Atmosphere is relaxed, clean and casual. The scene is kind of hipster but also saw some young families walk in as well. Get the lavash bread it comes with a delicious array of dips like hummus, spicy relish, 3 strained greekyogurt dip and if you like dolma they have that too! Not bad, Upper Valley. We need more restaurants with this level of quality!

Well my first experience with Tuckerbox was just Turkish Coffee, which was delightful as was the atmosphere of this Cafe. The second experience was lunch with a friend with Chai as our drink. We shared our orders and I have to say they were wonderful: Doner Kebab and Pachanga Borek. The lamb in the Kebab was so soft yet so delicately marinated it was food for the gods, while the Borek took our breaths away--I probably could have had a dozen of these! The dishes are presented beautifully and the taste is exquisite, not too mention how good the Chai was!!! I highly recommend this Turkish Bistro when you want something magical and different. Compliments to the chef!!!!!!!

Worst service experience in a Resturant. People pushed to sit at the bar when half the tables are empty for "reservations". Then people without reservations walk in and get the table. After 40min (long time to hold a table for reservations), I just asked for my dinner to go. Did they give me utensils? nO. I have to eat it in my hotel room with my fingers. Food is OK, but not worth the service problems.

I stumbled in to the Tuckerbox one day in 2009 on a whim. White River Junction is all of 2 miles from Hanover and the Dartmouth campus where I lived and worked, but refreshingly different--and it begins with the free parking! (Hanover folks know what I'm talking about. No meters! Imagine that.) The Tuckerbox is a charmer of a coffee shop/restaurant with a colourful range of regulars from med students to cartoonists and everything in between. In 2010 and 2011, I was one of those regulars--and I came for the reliably good food (I maintain, to this day, that this is the best grilled cheese anywhere) and for the eclectic community that seemed to fill its seats. Lunch here ends at 2, which is a bit of a challenge. I'd often find myself racing in to make the cut. Lunch specials were strong--with homemade jams, condiments, and a host of fresh veggies from local farmer's markets. After 2, the selection is sparse--down to a handful of pastries and snacks. My advice: get in early and get the daily scramble or a fantastic big-kid's grilled cheese.

The Connecticut River-Upper Valley seems to be increasingly becoming one of the more cosmopolitan, savory eating regions in recent years. There are few places that exemplify this transition so tangibly as Tuckerbox in White River Junction, Vermont! Four years ago when I last visited this venue, it proved to be more or less a "hipster" café with some fun artwork. Earlier tonight when visiting back with my aunt and uncle, it still functions as a café in the morning, but now also offers lunch and dinner offerings, including a WIDE array of Turkish kebab, gucek, babaghanoush, ezme, meze, and related dishes(!) These are serious dishes, in presentation and taste alike including the intricacies of the four meze topping options with stuffed grape leaves. Furthermore, their lamb gucek served simmering hot on a bed of seasoned rice pairs ridiculously smooth with a glass of their Angora (House) red wine and enhanced further by their house-made baklavas (including the phyllo dough and apple-maple syrup!) for dessert. You will most likely not be disappointed by this venue, a refreshing shot of the cosmopolitan in the Upper Valley!

Such a great dinner! My wife and I live in Woodstock and were doing our weekly dinner and movie date night. We had heard good things about Tuckerbox, so we decided to check it out. We were pleasantly greeted by the owner, Vural Oktay, himself and seated right away at a lovely table by the front window. The ambiance of the restaurant is warm and inviting and feels nicely intimate without being pretentious. Vural was just great. He suggested amazing Turkish wines making it super easy to start off the meal. I had been a restaurant server, and a good one, in college and my two hard and fast rules of service are: 1) Greet people right away with a smile and seat them and 2) Get drinks to the table before you do ANYTHING else. If you can accomplish those two things at a minimum, you're 80% of the way to great service and it's amazing how often these simple rules are forgotten at even the nicest restaurants. Well, Vural knew this instinctively and he set the tone for a lovely evening. He made excellent meal suggestions and we were off and running with the babaganoush and falafel for apps followed by the swordfish kabob and the chicken guvec for main courses. Everything was homemade, fresh and cooked to order. The babaganoush was super smokey and very distinctive and was just heavenly spread on the incredible light and airy, baked to order lavash bread. The swordfish was cooked perfectly and spiced just right and the guvec was this amazing dish served in the clay bowl in which it was cooked. Delicious, authentic Turkish cuisine served by an owner who deeply cares about your experience at his restaurant. Just superb!

I love this place!!! We are regulars and when it went under new ownership the new people made it a priority to remember us. And they did. The coffee is amazing and tr best place I know, even compares to nyc where I travel frequently.

Ugh the hipster stank is palpable at this place. Latte l ordered was pretty but really meh, and took about 15 minutes to come out. Service was really awful too, and the barista was really rude to my husband. Food looked really good but I don't think we will be back to try it.

A very charming Turkish restaurant located in downtown WRJ. We ordered grilled eggplant stuffed with beef and a swordfish/beef kabob plate for dinner. Both plates came with grilled bell peppers, rice, and grilled tomatoes. Of the two plates, we liked the stuffed eggplant the best. The eggplant was perfectly seasoned with onion and tomato. The kabobs were a little under seasoned, but grilled perfectly. The sides were tasty. We ate everything. The service was excellent. The very friendly waitress and manager greeted us as soon as we walked through the door. Water was refilled without being ask. The waitress and manager checked on us several times. Our total bill was $45 with a draft beer. A real gem in a small town with limited options for dinner.

What happens when you combine old world hospitality, young hard working ownership, a chef from the old country and an eclectic downtown bohemian White River location? A winning combination! This review is for their new Turkish dinner service. Bravo! We basically let the owner guide us thru the menu. To start, my wife and I shared the Turkish Meze Platter, starring tasty Babaganoush, and Turkish Salsa accompanied by fresh Lavash bread. Dinner was chicken Adana for her and Lamb Adana for me. Both amazing tasty and we were impressed that the chef was not shy in his use of spices. For dessert, we had the Kunefe and Apple Maple Baklava. While the Baklava was very tasty and the phyllo pastry hand made, we think that perhaps the moisture from the apple made the pastry a bit soggy. But the Kunefe (baked sweet cheese) was just heavenly! Well worth the extra wait! To top it all off, the bottle of Turkish wine was a very pleasant surprise. We will be back!

Due to all the great reviews on here I decided to take my wife and 3 kids here for dinner. Dinner doesn't start until 5 but they where kind enough to get a table made up for us a little early. We started with the large Meze Platter and Phyllo cheese rolls and both were great, my kids hogged the cheese rolls and were pretty full before the entrées arrived which we were kind of banking on. I got the Mixed Grill kebab which is huge and can easily feed two and my wife got the special Tuna kebab and we shared it all. It was all beautifully seasoned cooked and amazing! I was stuffed with all the wonderful food but my wife wanted a coffee and my kids something sweet so they split a baklava. The meal was a little spendy at over an $80 bill but it was money well spent and I look forward to going again.

Excellent place for a decent doner lamb and beef kabab. Good place to study and have a Turkish coffee. Their Turkish 'salsa' is a perfect pair with a piece of lavash and their hummus. This is odd, but the water cup size is generous - much appreciated!

This is hands down the best café in the Upper Valley. It's friendly, comfortable, good wifi and great turkish food & drinks. The desserts are always really amazing. They are also open for dinner, and it's a small space, so make a reservation. Suggestions: The daily scrambles are the weakest part of the menu - not really on par with the rest of the food. Expand the breakfast menu, add specials to the dinner menu and at least one more vegetarian option. I highly recommend the Tuckerbox - great atmosphere & service and a wonderful place to meet friends or get a little work done.

Tuckerbox is a great little cafe along the lonely route from Boston to Burlington. There appear to be a lot of solid options in White River Junction, but this place jumped out at me, and I'm glad I went with it. The BLT - really a reflection on the ingredients you choose - was excellent, and their special kebab sandwich was even more so. Pretty good value for this kind of fare and great service. My only grief lies with the carpet...

First visit to Tuckerbox Friday night for dinner, about 9pm. Service was spectacular, waitstaff explained all of the Turkish options, and the wisdom of starting with the mezze platter. Just delicious. Nice selection of kebabs, local brews. Great ambience too. What a great addition to the Upper Valley!

Marginal coffee shop/eatery... Food was okay, coffee was fantastic, service was AWFUL! Like prior reviews state, some of the staff is straight up rude and cranky.. One of the few ethnic food spots around, and kind of weird as it seems to cater to hipsters... No baby changing station in bathrooms... We have a little one and could have used some support from staff with getting a table; but there was none given. We won't be back.

My husband and I were driving through White River Junction looking for lunch today, and decided to stop at Tuckerbox. We arrived at 2:15, and they told us they had stopped serving lunch at 2, so we decided to order some drinks to go. I ordered an iced chai. It took 15 minutes to get my drink, even though I was the only person on line. I got all the way out to the car before sipping, and realized that the clerk had given me an iced latte instead. I took it back inside and nicely asked for a remake, and instead of apologizing for giving me the wrong drink, the clerk rolled her eyes at me, hastily threw together an iced chai, and banged it down on the counter saying "Chai." Honestly, I should have stuck with the iced latte I was mistakenly given, because the chai was foul (tasted like water with a little bit of clove oil in it). I took one sip and poured it out. We live in the area, but won't be going back. The other reviews are right: the customer service sucks.

It definitely satisfies my craving for a Mocha in a real cup with a quick tasty breakfast (the daily scramble). The staff has always been pleasant and seem to have a nice report with their customers. The daily scramble is usually different every time I go and many times is vegetarian (but not always). They make good use of vegetables and staples like beans. The last time I went, they had a whole grain toast option with the scramble which I really appreciated.

The food was incredible, reminded me of places in much larger cities. The service was impeccable- the waiter put the cloth napkin in my lap and has excellent recommendations about wine and food. The atmosphere was great as well. Our new favorite spot!

This restaurant is fantastic. One of the best in Vermont. The Turkish food is beyond delicious. The chilled yogurt, spinanc and garlic soup is a marvel made possible by the chef's home made yogurt and inventiveness. The Turkish Salsa is amazing!!! I have been in Vermont for three days and have eaten here twice and plan to stop by on my way back to Boston. This place is worth the detour. Do't go to Hanover to eat, stop by this place!!!

Ate dinner and breakfast at Tuckerbox in early April on our bike trip across country. The service was great, the food unique and very tasty, specifically the Shrimp Guvec, the Meze platter, and the Mediterranean Breakfast Plate. This place is very popular and was hoppin when we were there. If you are in the White River Junction area try it out, you will be pleased.

I had the egg sammich, she had the scramble, which on this day was cheddar, mushrooms, and onions. The sammich was made with with wicked thick bread. It was overall good, but greasy. (Yeah, I know that's how egg sandwiches are...) My fiancee scramble was probably what I should have gotten, it was delicious, not greasy. I got the bold roast, which was quite bold...I loved it. Stronger than other bolds I've tasted...certainly not that starbucks crap. There were a lot of flies flying around on the empty tables. Though I noticed this throughout our trip in VT over Labor Day. And good place for people watching!

I love this coffee shop. Very cute place with good food and coffee. Kind of reminds me of Friends - a great place to go and catch up with a friend over coffee (as compared to Dirt Cowboy which can get a bit cramped). As my friends say, WRJ is the Brooklyn of the UV, so the place has a nice artsy feel which I love! :-) Also, not sure what other reviewers were talking about re: rude staff. Everyone I interacted with was friendly. (Maybe this 'crabby patty' quit?)

I love Vermont. I really do. Cute cafes where I can get work done that have wi-fi are only a bonus - and a good one, at that. My only question is this: WHY YA GOTTA BE SO RUDE?????????? I'm from NYC. I get rude all day and all night. I get that the kitchen closes at 2pm (which sucks, btw, if you haven't eaten lunch and happen to arrive at 2:05pm). But don't give me crazy 'tude about how I have to eat somewhere else, and then passive-aggressively boot me. I'm here to give you my business, to drink your coffee and eat your scones and relax like everyone else. There are nicer ways to inform patrons that they can't bring outside food in. Also, if you decide to stay and would like to read, you're going to have to request that they turn the lights on (good luck with that). And it was so cold that my friend and I both had to wear scarves and down jackets. Inside. HULLO. There are other cafes nearby. I'll be going to those instead. There's good coffee all over Vermont, people.

Tbox is really the best coffeeshop in the Upper Valley. Having just moved from San Francisco to New Hampshire, I was going through serious withdrawal from all the gourmet coffees I used to have at my fingertips -- but luckily, my office is across the tracks from this little gem. Sometimes I go in and pretend I live in a city again, with the rustic decor, exposed brick, and artsy people who often frequent this place. BTW, Reed makes the BEST lattes.

Really sweet little coffee shop during the day serving ok coffee and some ok muffins, sandwiches, etc. Nice vibe to just hang out in. I would love some stronger coffee, but can't have it all. Dinner is a delicious affair, casual turkish food nice wines, bustling vibe. Good food, average service, decent prices. Makes a nice change to the restaurant scene.

Best coffee in the upper valley! I especially love their iced mochas and iced caramel lattes. They are very friendly and fast. We also take advantage of their frequent customer program and get free drinks! The atmosphere is great for reading, working, or connecting with a friend.

Tuckerbox has the best latte's in the Upper Valley! They beat Dirt Cowboy in Hanover hands down--and really, what else is there? But, even if there were a Starbucks in the Upper Valley, I'd choose Tuckerbox--why? Their lattes are made by trained baristas who produce an artfully crafted and displayed product that just doesn't taste delicious, it looks beautiful. The employees are often quite friendly, and during the past year I've been going I think the customer service has only gotten better. The coffee club is nice, too! Who doesn't like a free coffee every now and then for a show of continued patronage? And, the food is simple and delicious. But, the bagels a few doors down are pretty damn good, too. The whole wheat everything bagel is my favorite. We often make the 30-minute trip to White River Junction on the weekend to start our day, and it's always worth the trip. The only thing we'd wish they'd do is expand eastward into New Hampshire's part of the Upper Valley!

Friend brought me here for a good little meetup. I really enjoyed the place. Excellent coffee, for any place in the world, not just WRJ. I like all the food we tried, and while the menu is small, defiantly sufficient for lunch. While maybe slightly pricey, the food was high quality and treated with care. I played on my computer for a while, and while a few more plugs would be nice, the free internet was a pleasure. As Rachel pointed out, some of the staff was rude. Really just one person. I think this cost them a star, and I'm slightly hesitant to go back. However, the other staff members were very nice.

Very good place to await the Amtrak back to Gotham... Big picture window looking out at the snow flurries. Top coffee, granola parfait, granola "steamer" (my better half had that, looked like granola and hot milk - she loved it anyway), egg sandwich. We took away some blueberry muffins to have on the train - they were an order of magnitude above anything Amtrak have to offer. We ordered at the counter and the staff delivered the food to the table. Seemed to be just the two guys working there - doing a great job. The music was clear and yet conversation was comfortable. My only niggle was that three of us were squeezed round a table for two while many people on their own were taking up bigger tables. They should consider some communal tables for best use of space. But a lovely space.

Baristas with crazy top-notch skills and a side of surly. Good vibe, and I'd be happy to chill there in the evenings. Ohhhh but wait! 5pm close. C'mon, Upper Valley. Take a chance on at least 8pm. Panera does. Don't make me go there anymore. Food is pricier than I'm comfortable with. An otherwise stellar grilled cheese and tomato hurt the wallet at 7.50. Maybe it is a marriage of artisan cheese lovingly crafted from milk abundantly flowing from the owner's organically grain-fed free range star cow, and an heirloom tomato birthed from the lineage of a 300 year old seed. Could be. I'll ask. Cos I will be there again.

You will not find a better coffee shop in Seattle, SF, NYC, SF, LA, or anywhere else. Believe me, I've looked. Not only is the coffee terrific, the food is out of this world and the atmosphere is just as it should be. Scones, yogurt, sandwiches, cookies, and a latte made with love. What else can you ask for?

Tuckerbox is a good coffee shop in a really remote area. The setup is pretty nice. They seemed to have plenty of seats and tables for the amount of traffic they get. I also never had any issues with street parking. They seemed to have good food options, but all I had was a latte. If this place were in Boston it would only get three stars. I wasn't very impressed with the Vermont Coffee Roaster espresso. My latte was also served way too hot and as a result everything else broke down. The drink was on the thin side and the microfoam was good but not great. Anyway, it was good but not great.

Tried to go back for one of their super-good BLTs (really the best I've ever eaten) and gave up - the place was filled, once again, with people working on tier laptops nursing their coffees. Also, it really is unpleasant to have to share a large table with strangers why can't they put in a few smaller tables and remove the goliath? I will lurk until there's space and get a BLT eventually.

Best cafe in the area. Pleasant atmosphere. Great service. Peak times are difficult because of size, yet service dead on and food/beverage consistent in taste and quantity. All standard cafe hot and cold beverages are spot on.

Tuckerbox, at night, makes a lovely transition from tech-savvy cafe into a candlelit spot on the corner of Main Street in White River Junction...there's a luminous glow that draws you in. Inside the new owners have added their family's Turkish heritage and recipes to the menu which is quite welcome to this tiny Vermont town. All sorts of kebobs - seafood-lamb-beef tenderloin-shrimp are served on egg-shaped platters alongside tender rice pilaf and braised red cabbage. Our table loved the swordfish and lamb kebobs as well as the stuffed vegetable roasted eggplant topped with a red pepper sauce...a delicious vegan option for one of us. We began our meal with the traditional Meze which included haydari (a yogurt-cheese based dip), hummus, babaganoush, spicy Turkish salsa, stuffed grape leaves with currants all served with gorgeous hot lavash bread. Service was quite attentive from the owner and his wife. He mentioned there is no liquor license as of yet, but its fine to BYOB. Note to self...come back for more! What a gem in downtown White River.

This place is great all around. Good coffee, good soup, friendly staff..... I came here to study and it was great, not too loud, but some soft music... I ordered a latte and for some reason it took forever so they gave me the bigger size for free. I am VERY impressed, WRJ is really moving up in the world!

I grew up in White River. Now I live in Cambridge, home of many lovely coffee shops, and the Tuckerbox Cafe is still one of my favorite places anywhere. I try my best to visit every time that I'm back home - this is everything a coffee shop should be (minus the limited hours...). I love the vibe, the huge windows for people watching, the comfortable chairs. The coffee is good enough, if not amazing (I like the drip coffee, but the espresso's a little...something...). But this is WRJ, so a place like this is extraordinary.

Step inside the small, hip café called the Tuckerbox in White River Junction and you instantly feel like a local. You can sip espresso while catching up on the daily news in softly worn leather chairs, show off your artistic talents on the blank chalkboards, or fill-up on food from their imaginative menu. It's the kind of spot that the locals revel in and where visitors can easily forget that they are in a small town in southern Vermont. The Tuckerbox, which has been open for two years, sits perfectly positioned between north and south Main Streets in downtown White River Junction. The large picture windows provide sunny views of people passing by, a small park with colorful gardens and the Amtrak train station for which White River is well-known. Owner Eric Hartling says his passion for coffee and requests from the community for another venue to grab their daily cup of Joe is why he opened the Tuckerbox. "Adding a light breakfast and lunch menu expands what I can offer my customers," said Hartling. Many of the items on the menu incorporate local food from a handful of nearby farms. On most days, the Daily Scramble ($5.95) consists of seasonal vegetables such as herbs, heirloom tomatoes, onions, peppers; just about whatever Hartling can get his hands on. The coffee and tea selections are Fair Trade, organic and from Vermont companies. Hartling says the most popular item on the breakfast food menu is the Egg "Samich" ($5.95) with a fried egg, Tasso ham (or without), cracked pepper, and sharp cheddar cheese between two sliced of Texas-style toast made by a local baker. Coffees and teas range from $1.68 for a small cup of their regular blend to $3.25 for a large latte. But it's not the "Samich" on the menu that usually gets Tuckerbox customers talking. It's the Peanut Butter and Bacon sandwich ($4.95) with smokey bacon, smooth peanut butter all grilled to what they describe as "wicked yumminess." I stopped in to try out the Tuckerbox on a cool but bright Tuesday morning in early September. While I enjoyed watching the town come to life, local residents streamed into the café, ordering lattes, cappuccinos, muffins or scones--mostly to go. There were a handful of people hanging out at the large community tables reading the papers and utilizing the café's free wireless internet. I would suspect that the lunch crowd is similar; a few customers sitting and taking a moment to relax mixed with the rush of workers from nearby businesses and students from the Center for Cartoon Studies down the street. The lunch menu has an appealing mix of Soup and Salad ($7.95) to the Falafel sandwich ($6.95). For breakfast, I ordered the Daily Scramble, a generous serving of scrambled eggs mixed with chili spices, garlic, sautéed onions and bell peppers, topped with melted cheddar cheese. The thick toast on the side was lightly buttered and perfectly grilled. My caramel flavored latte was a well-balanced combination of sweet and bold flavors proving that the Barista knows what she is doing. At first bite of the Scramble, I became a believer that a meal at the Tuckerbox is the ideal way to start your day. The last few bites hit me with a surprising punch of garlic flavor, leaving me wondering why the garlic was folded into only a small section of the scramble. I wish that the entire entrée was balanced with the sweet, pungent flavor of garlic, but that is a minor critique for what was overall a delicious meal in a pleasant setting. The Tuckerbox is open six days a week, Monday through Saturday. Hours vary, so best to check their web site for updates or call ahead to see if they are indeed open. You can see the full menu and learn more about the café at Tuckerboxvermont.com .

Cafe culture with snacks and sandwiches in an unlikely area not too far off the highway so for those enroute North and South this is a great stop over spot for quality food and drink. With the amount of laptops in use here you'd think they're giving the goods and services away. Strange for the local environs for sure!

I moved to the Upper Valley from a big city and I think I was most frightened about losing good coffee. I can handle small, and I can handle rural, but I love espresso and a good café is an important part of my work and social life. Thank God for the Tuckerbox then. Easy to get to, easy to park, next to cool stores like Revolution and with great espresso and food.

After reading positive reviews a while back I finally made it down to Tuckerbox. They did a nice job renovating the Como Va space into a great looking cafe space. Good seating and cute chalk boards offer a space for all the cartoon studies folks in downtown WRJ to doodle. Nice touches all around. I had a chai and falafel for lunch. They did a soy milk substitutes on the latte for free which was cool, as compared to 60 cents at a Starbucks. The tea and my meal came out very quickly and the falefel was delicious. The sammich consisted of 4 good size chickpea fritters along with lettuce and big red tomato slices. Instead of the usual tahini and yogurt sauce you'd expect they had a nice garlicky tasting sauce which reminded me a bunch of the dipping sauce Tip Top has with their bread/rolls. All of this wrapped in a nice warm pita made for a good lunch. I am especially happy since Murphy's has removed the "Green Mountain Wrap" from the menu limiting UV falafels to the one available at Lous which is just so-so. So a big Yay! to Tuckerbox for being a new good new UV lunch spot.

Super tasty hot chocolate, one of the best I've had, bf had "you can call it above average" latte. Tasty sandwich, nice space, was pretty busy on a Saturday morning but we found a spot at one end of the big ol' table. Happy.

Great coffee, great vibe, free wifi. Plenty of free parking. What more can you ask for? Easily, the best café in the Upper Valley, hands down.

Tried Tuckerbox the other day for the first time. I ordered a cappuccino and I have to say it is one of the better coffee's I have had in the upper valley.

I checked this place out the other day based on the excellent reviews from my fellow yelpers. Excellent coffee and the danish I had was excellent and I just couldn't help myself and also had a blueberry muffin which was really good too. Thanks again to my fellow yelpers for clueing me in on a nice little place I didn't know existed. Check this place out.

This is the real deal, or at least as close as you can get in the Upper Valley. Leaves Dirt Cowboy, Rosey Jekes, and all other pretenders in the dust. Very good coffee/espresso (the barista today made an orchid out of the foam today). Best scones by far--if you like the drier/crispier kind vs. the cakey/doughey kind. My husband swears by their coffee cake (especially when warmed). Have also had BLT's, chicken salad, and other luncheon items there. Charming place with comfy sitting and communal table for reading the provided newspapers. Also, very nice staff. White River Junction is really a great up and coming town--a little piece of Seattle in the Upper Valley.
